Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh counselled extensively before building the city. The Maharaja studied voraciously the books on architecture and VastuShashtra and he himself was a renowned astrologer, astronomer and a great mathematician.  A Bengali Brahman, named Vidyadhar Bhattacharya was assigned for planning Jaipur City. It took four years to complete the enitre city. Jaipur is enclosed by massive walls and has citadels at regular interval. In 1876, Prince of Wales and his wife Victoria visited India on a tour. That time’s Maharaja Ram Singh had painted Jaipur City in pink colour, since pink symbolises hospitality and Pink became the trademark of Jaipur’s building colour since then.
